Stone Pier Press is a nonprofit project based in San Francisco bent on publishing good books about good food, and we are seeking a fiscal sponsor. Our books highlight how people are solving problems to produce and consume food sustainably and humanely. By inspiring and informing our readers, Stone Pier books make it easier for people to act on their own good intentions to eat well for themselves and the planet.

Our authors tend to be activists and every book we publish supports and amplifies solutions within the good food movement. For that reason we work closely with environmental, humane, and good food organizations, contributing to advocacy campaigns and building momentum for a kinder, greener world

We’d like to get our books into the hands of more kids in underserved communities so we’re undertaking a fundraising campaign with First Book, which promotes literacy by making age-appropriate books and resources available to more children. Our goal is to donate a minimum of 500 copies of Sprig the Rescue Pig and Gwen the Rescue Hen.

Low literacy rates continue to be a problem in the United States, particularly for low-income households. Consider the following:

In middle-income neighborhoods the ratio of books per child is 13 to one; in low-income neighborhoods, the ratio is one book for every 830 children.

Children growing up in homes without books are on average three years behind kids in homes with lots of books, even when controlled for other key factors, such as income and parents’ education.

Creating a steady stream of new, age-appropriate books has been shown to nearly triple interest in reading within months.

One in four children in America grow up without learning how to read.

“We are so grateful to Stone Pier Press for their commitment to ensuring all kids, everywhere,
no matter where theyre from, have a book to fall in love with.”
